Hi! I just joined & am new to the reptile world. My son has been wanting a reptile for a long time now. We think we decided to get my son a crested gecko for Christmas (are other choice is a leopard gecko). Been doing a lot of research on what the crested needs. Is the Zoo Med Reptibreeze Open Air Screen Cage 18x18x36 a good choice for a home for him? I was also looking at the 24x24x36 one as well. But am a little worried if we get a baby. Any advice of these are good cages, and of not, what you do recommend. Thanks for any kind of help!

The problem with a screen cage is that it's very hard to maintain the humidity that the crested gecko will need. You can probably use it if you're willing to put plastic around most of it and then it will probably not look so good. What makes more sense is to get either an Exo-terra or Zoo-med 12"x12"x18" terrarium which is front opening, and made of glass except for the screen top. I have kept my single crested gecko in this ever since he was tiny (it's been about 6 years). Some people prefer to go with the larger size (18x18x24), though I wouldn't put a baby in something so large. If you decide to go with the larger size, consider putting the baby in a 10 gallon tank till it gets bigger and then transferring it to the bigger cage.

I would start off with a large kritter keeper for a baby Crestie, and then you could eventually upgrade an adult to an 18x18x24 (after they're at least 15g, which might be 12-18 months old).

If you buy a juvenile Crestie (5-15g range) a 12x12x18 would be a good size, again eventually planning on the upgrade.

I'd go with glass rather than screen like Aliza said, as it can be really challenging to maintain the proper humidity with an all screen enclosure. Cresties need about 80-90% humidity at night while they're active, drying down to about 40-50% during the day but no lower.
