Do Leopard Geckos need a heat lamp if they have a UTH?

Hi!

I am looking into getting a gecko, though I'm a bit conflicted on whether I need a heat source other than an under tank heater? I read that geckos need a heat source for their belly so they can digest their food, but that's it. I'm worried if I put in a lamp that might possibly overheat my gecko, but I'm also worried without a lamp it might freeze.

Thank you for your time.

I am assuming you are talking about a leopard gecko, no leopard geckos should not have lights for heating. They absorb their heat from their bellies, there for an under the tank heater is important. Also leopard geckos are nocturnal so they don't require a light to bask in, since they don't bask. Under the tank heaters are all you need, make sure to get one that covers 1/3 two 1/2 of your tank. I would recommend getting a Zilla thermostat so you can keep your heater at the proper 85 to 95 degrees.

Good luck with your new gecko!

As long as the temperature in your home is comfortable for humans (i.e. at least mid 60'sF) your gecko will be fine with the under tank heater. Remember that when the gecko is in its warm hide, the air inside the hide is also heated from the heat mat and is trapped in the hide so it's warmer.

It really depends on what the temperature is in your house. Where would you be planning to put the gecko, and what are the temperatures in that particular location?
